Before the First Rack: Preparing the First Helixrack Room
How room preparation and an October 2022 500/500 Mbps network activation separated facility progress from customer-ready service for the first rack.

On October 27, 2022, the provider recorded a 500/500 Mbps business fiber circuit and provider-assigned IPv4 /28 as active in the Elizabeth room we were preparing for Helixrack. It was an important facility milestone, but it was not a service launch. The room had no production customer assignments, and a reachable circuit was only one part of making the first rack usable.
Preparing a bounded first room
Preparation started earlier that month with cleaning, equipment inventory, rack layout, and cable-path planning. Power and network equipment needed positions that could be inspected and serviced without turning the room into a maze of temporary runs. A qualified electrical contractor handled the regulated work; our preparation record covered the equipment, layout, mounting, and cable plan.
The small footprint narrowed the first operating problem. Instead of treating every open rack unit as available capacity, we planned around the room’s actual electrical envelope and the equipment on hand. Any later customer system would still need acceptable power draw, airflow, network handoff, physical fit, and maintenance access.
That distinction governs how we evaluate capacity. Space is only useful when a specific machine can be powered, cooled, connected, handled, and maintained in that position.
Establishing the first network edge
The October 27 activation gave the room its first business connection. A configuration export from the following day records the network edge being tested after the circuit became available.
The recorded service was 500 Mbps symmetric. The provider-assigned /28 belonged to the facility edge and gave the team a small, finite address pool to document from the beginning. Its job was to make the first room reachable at the scale we were preparing, not to imply that every remaining service dependency had been completed.
Separate preparation from service
The readiness record was completed separately in November. That sequence established two useful states: the carrier could activate a circuit, and Helixrack could later accept the complete installation into service. Those were not the same event.
“The circuit is active” describes one dependency. “The server is ready” requires the reviewed installation, power and cooling fit, network assignment, management path, tests, and customer handoff to work together. Keeping those states separate prevents a carrier date from becoming an unsupported customer go-live promise.
The preparation period also gave us time to create basic operating records before equipment accumulated. The inventory identified each facility device and its role. The layout documented power and network paths. The cable plan reduced temporary routing that would become difficult to trace or service later.
Each record answered an operational question: What is this device? Where is it connected? Who owns it? What can be moved safely? Which facility function depends on it?
Building on the first operating boundary
Cooling and protected-power work recorded in 2023 expanded the operating envelope beyond that first preparation period. Those later projects did not change what October 27 meant: it remained the date of a network dependency, not a claim that the finished service already existed.
The versioned preparation procedure also carried the early checklist into our pre-shipping review. The details have matured, but the order remains useful: understand the machine, verify the operating fit, approve the destination, and only then arrange delivery.
What this means before you ship
Customers should not have to discover a rack-fit, power, cooling, network, or access problem after a carrier has the box. We review the whole configuration before issuing receiving instructions.
