3,200 Square Feet: Capacity, Support, and Metered Pricing

How Helixrack expanded to 3,200 square feet and 22 racks while keeping capacity reviews and metered pricing tied to each machine.

By December 31, 2024, the connected Helixrack operating footprint in Elizabeth had grown from 1,200 to 3,200 square feet. Six production racks entered the expansion, bringing the facility total from 16 to 22, and a second two-ton mini-split supplemented the original five-ton cooling system.

The physical inventory reached 420U of configured customer-facing rail. That number described positions we had built and documented; usable capacity remained the smaller set that also passed power, cooling, network, weight, and maintenance review for a specific machine.

More room changed the questions, not the standard

The expansion gave receiving, staging, and production equipment more deliberate space. It also gave us more flexibility when separating general-purpose servers, storage systems, and denser configurations with different power and airflow needs.

An open rack unit still answered only the first question: where might this chassis fit? Before approving a shipment, we continued to review dimensions, weight, rails, airflow, expected and peak draw, power-supply configuration, network ports, cabling, and maintenance access together.

That review kept the new footprint honest. Twenty-two racks did not mean every position could accept every system, and 420U of configured rail did not equal 420U available for immediate sale. Electrical headroom, cooling fit, rack reservations, switching, distribution, staging, and safe service access all shaped the deployable number.

Cooling grew with the operating area

The second two-ton mini-split supplemented the five-ton system installed during Phase One. Its purpose was to support the expanded operating area and give the team more control over how heat-producing equipment was placed.

Cooling capacity remained connected to the placement review. Nameplate equipment capacity alone could not approve a dense server; inlet conditions, airflow direction, neighboring load, rack position, and the machine’s expected operating profile still mattered. We recorded those details with the configuration so later changes could be evaluated against the same boundary.

Metered pricing made different systems easier to compare

As the range of accepted hardware grew, the standard pricing model separated fixed rack space from measured resources. The rack-space base represented the approved physical placement and standard facility service. Measured rack power and outbound internet transfer reflected the resources the machine actually used.

That structure made estimates easier to explain. Two servers occupying the same rack height could have very different power and transfer profiles, while a larger chassis could be modest in both. A useful estimate therefore identified the machine, base plan, meter boundaries, applicable rates, expected consumption, and separately authorized work.

The accepted quote remained the handoff between a public estimate and an approved deployment. It confirmed the configuration, placement, billing start, measurement boundary, optional services, and any exception before receiving instructions were issued.

Support capacity grew alongside physical capacity

Rail and cooling were only part of the operating envelope. Receiving space, test positions, maintenance access, documentation, and the people available to perform approved work determined how much hardware the facility could support well.

The larger footprint let us make those stages clearer without changing the customer boundary. You retained control of the hardware, operating system, applications, credentials, data, and backups. We remained responsible for the reviewed physical environment, facility-side handoffs, metering, and work authorized in writing.
